There is no state-specific Colorado law that prohibits driving with a dog in your lap. However, our state legally requires drivers to operate their vehicles with care. Police can cite a driver whose pet interferes with the steering, braking, visibility, or overall control of their vehicle. This is to be determined by an officer observing you and your dog. The Colorado State Patrol reminds all drivers that unrestrained pets can be a dangerous distraction before an accident happens.

A Distracted Dog Could Still Lead to a Careless Driving Ticket

“Lap dog” law or not, Colorado drivers can still receive a ticket if their dog was the cause of unsafe driving. If the dog blocks your view, jumps onto the steering wheel, or causes lane drift, that may be all an officer needs to determine you failed to exercise due care. If distraction leads to a crash, the legal consequences can be very serious.

Colorado State Patrol recommends securing pets in a harness, carrier, or crate every time they join you in the car. Unrestrained dogs can become projectiles during a sudden stop or an accident, and a deploying airbag can seriously injure your pet sitting in your lap. Keeping your pet restrained during the ride and in the back seat will reduce distractions and protect everyone who is along for the ride.
