Grand Junction E-Motorcycle Arrests: What We Know So Far

According to a report from KKCO11News, Calls started coming in to Grand Junction police mid-afternoon on August 5^th about a group of young people riding non-street-legal electric motorcycles on city streets.

As police responded, the e-motorcycles fled down city streets to a downtown parking garage, where police say one of the riders tried to escape by riding down a stairwell.

What Happened With the E-Motorcycles in Grand Junction?

Police went to seek out the electric motorcycle riders around 1 p.m. on August 5. A large group of riders turned out to be two adults and 11 minors who failed to stop at a signal on North 12^th Street and Elm Avenue, which nearly caused a crash, according to KKCO News 11’s report. Officers caught up to the e-motorcycles at the Rood Avenue parking garage, where police say one rider attempted to ride down the stairwell.

How Many Kids Were Arrested—and What Are the Adults Accused Of?

Altogether, police made thirteen arrests. All 11 minors were charged with reckless driving before being released to their parents or guardians. According to the city of Grand Junction, the two adults, 22-year-old Cody Nation and 23-year-old Kevin Espinoza, face 11 counts each of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Colorado law generally defines that offense as inducing, aiding, or encouraging a child under 18 to violate a law or ordinance.

According to GJPD, “mini e-motorcycles and off-road motorcycles” are not legal for use on public roadways. Police added they “should only be operated on private property within the city limits.” Officers say they were responding to allegations involving traffic violations, a near-crash, and riders attempting to evade police.
