It felt like a high-profile moment. A mental-health-related shelter-in-place incident brought a significant police presence to 23rd and G Road in Grand Junction on February 3, 2026. A coordinated response from local police and the Colorado State Patrol brought the incident to a close in about 40 minutes without injury.

According to a recent snapshot shared by Grand Junction Police on Facebook, the increased police patrols and heightened enforcement in early 2026 are primarily driven by a surge in traffic accidents, dangerous driving behavior, and a rising call volume.

Why Patrol Expansion Is Happening Now

Advocates for the plan feel that when residents see Grand Junction police present, not just when responding, it builds up community confidence. The city feels that when our police are visible, it reduces the opportunity for crime and increases traffic to local businesses.

The mental-health-related incident from February 3 is not a typical criminal case for Grand Junction, but it shows calls for service evolving. Residents want assurance that our downtown feels safe; the extra officers you may see downtown are meeting those expectations.

The next time you are downtown, you may notice a few more officers on foot during peak business hours, and some additional vehicles in entertainment districts and public spaces. While the police are positioned in areas with higher call volume, they always appreciate our support. Say hello next time you see them. Grand Junction will continue to move them around based on call patterns and community feedback.
