A Colorado Girl Scout troop is trying to get their city to ban smoking in vehicles if anyone 18-years-old or younger is in the car.

Five 13-year-old girls from Girl Scout troop 60789 want to protect minors from second-hand smoke and they've approached the Aurora City Council asking for an ordinance prohibiting smoking in automobiles when children and teens are traveling in it.

The girls got past their first major hurdle when the Aurora City Council unanimously voted to pass the first reading of the ordinance. The no smoking measure will now move on to a final vote.

Even if the measure doesn't pass, the girls have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award for their campaign to bring awareness to and affect public policy on the dangers of second-hand smoke in a vehicle.
