New Flag on Mt. Garfield Has Already Been Removed – at Least Three Times

Do you recall when I posted last December about placing an American flag at the top of Mt. Garfield? Well, it's already gone. As a matter of fact, my flag was removed within a month or two after placing it there. Fortunately, someone replaced it with their own flag. That flag is now missing. What's going on?

On December 31, 2016, the flag was fastened to the existing base near the summit of Mt. Garfield. This spot has been the location for dozens of flags over the last few decades. Photo evidence from Instagram suggests the flag lasted at least a few days before being removed. The photo below was taken on January 1, 2017.

Before long, it mysteriously disappears. Following the loss of that flag, another hiker took it upon themselves to replace it. By February 24, 2017, another flag flew high over the valley.

That flag lasted at least a few days as you can see from the time stamp on the photo below.

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, hikers climbed to the site and found that flag to be missing.

Looking at the series of photos, starting with mine on December 31, it appears as if at least three different flags have been placed at this site so far this year. Who keeps taking them down? Let's not be too quick to blame Mother Nature. I feel confident my flag was securely fastened to the base. Judging by the other photos, it seems those flags had been adequately secured.

Personally, I found placing a flag on Mt. Garfield to be a rewarding experience. I do wish those responsible for taking it down would find it within themselves to invest their time in something more productive

In the meantime, if you're looking for an excellent hike, give some thought to placing a flag at the summit of Mt. Garfield.
