Halloween Safety Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating
Dressing up your ghosts and goblins, and hitting the streets of Grand Junction for Halloween is a blast. To ensure you and your family enjoys trick-or-treating make sure everyone know how to stay safe.
Halloween is a great time to take your family out to mingle with your neighbors, but there are some things we need to be aware of when taking our kids out for an evening of haunts and treats.
The Grand Junction Police Department, Grand Junction Fire Department, Mesa County Sheriff's Office and School District 51 have provided these simple safety tips.
Picking the Proper Costume
Costumes should be:
- Fire-safe: a store bought costume should be flame resistant.
- Provide free movement, but should have parts that drag or could catch fire.
- Masks should provide clear vision from the front, sides and bottom.
- Props (guns, knives, swords, etc.) should be made of cardboard or flexible so they don't cause injury or are mistaken for the real thing.
**Take a photo of your trick-or-treaters so they can be easily identified by emergency personnel if necessary.
Rules on the Streets
- Make sure your littles are accompanied by an adult or teenager.
- Trick-or-treaters should carry a flashlight or glow stick.
- While walking: cross only at intersections or designated crosswalks. Avoid major intersections if possible.
- While driving: drive slower than the posted speed limit, watch for children crossing the street, use your hazard lights while driving slow and making frequent stops.
Home and Ready for Treats
- Adults should check treats for tampering of the wrappers.
- Don't let your kids eat homemade treats unless they are from a trusted source.
- Talk to your kids about anything that may have troubled them during the night.
