At a time when more and more cities are becoming less and less safe, one city in Colorado seems to be bucking that trend.

Fruita.

In a study done by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, three cities on the western slope made the top 40.

Grand Junction was ranked the 34th safest city and Montrose the 39th safest city in Colorado. These rankings were based on FBI crime statistics as well as the least amount of violent and non-violent crimes.

The Fruita police department says it is because of the citizens of Fruita and the relationship they have with police officers there.

Colorado as a state is ranked the 30th safest state in the United States. With very few violent crimes committed there, it's no wonder Fruita is in the top ten. Steamboat Springs was ranked tenth, just behind Fruita.

Cities and towns under 10,000 were not considered in this study.
