Montrose, Colorado, might be a stop on the way to the San Juan Mountains for some, but for us, it’s home. And when it comes to home cookin’, this town has a kitchen voice all its own.

I love that you can still find restaurants that have been serving the valley for decades, right alongside new spots bringing fresh flavors to the Western Colorado food scene.

Like many Colorado towns, Montrose started out small. Family diners at first, then local steak-and-egg joints serving southwestern flavor. Today, the Camp Robber restaurant (across from Home Depot) has been with us since 1994. These guys have been feeding Montrose for over 30 years under the same ownership. As outdoor adventurers, retirees, and Black Canyon visitors increased, the demand for restaurants like Camp Robber continues to rise..

Driving from the airport to the south end of town will show that Montrose is well balanced with both traditional and novelty restaurants. A great steak and classic American fare are still in high demand at places like The Stone House (opened in 2008). Newer spots like Silver Basin Brewing (2022) and The Cabin (2018) are also great places to eat with fresh energy and atmosphere.

Colorado Views & Early Birds Hours

Montrose has several places to choose from if you are looking for a meal with a view. The Stone House sits right next to U.S. 550 with a great line of sight toward the San Juans and the open sky. It’s a great place to stop for dinner. Early risers will find Backstreet Bagel and Camp Robber open first with full-service breakfast if you are up early to hike the Black Canyon of the Gunnison or the Perimeter Trail in Ouray.
