Have you ever wanted to travel back in time? While time machines don't exist, it is possible to take a trip back in time around Colorado by visiting any of the ghost towns that pepper the beautiful state.

Colorado is home to more than 1,500 ghost towns, of which, about 640 remain. Mining towns popped up throughout the state during the 1800s and early 1900s, some of these towns prospered to become a modern representation of their former selves, while others collapsed and returned to their original state of nothingness.

Then there are towns that are somewhere in between, no one lives there -- physically -- but some of the buildings -- and possibly former residents -- remain, reminding us of their former glory.

Some of these Colorado ghost towns can be reached by any car while others you'll need a 4x4 vehicle. Some of them you don't even need to leave your car to see. If you do visit any of these haunting locations, please leave things as you see them so others can enjoy the vast history.
