Western Colorado boasts one of the most amazing places to go for live entertainment, namely the Robinson Theatre at the Moss Performing Arts Center. If you haven't attended a show at the venue, here's a list of five reasons why it's imperative you do so as soon as possible.

Before we go any farther, it should be noted that the above spelling of the theaters name, Robinson Theatre, is not a typo. The faculty, students, and administration opted to use the traditional spelling of "theatre" when rededicating the venue.

On a sad note, the theater's namesake, William S. Robinson, passed away just a few weeks ago. Bill Robinson had retired for Colorado Mesa University, then Mesa State College, before I became involved with the theater program. Fortunately, he came out of retirement to direct a show circa 1991, and I had the pleasure of performing in an orchestra under his direction.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall attending the venues open house somewhere around 1977 during a class field trip. At that time, the region really didn't have many 600-plus seat venues with a stage adequate to host live theater and full-scale musical productions.

Here are five reasons why you'll want to take in a performance, any performance, coming to the Robinson Theatre:

  • The venue hosts some truly extraordinary live performances
  • Robinson Theatre is equipped with truly state-of-the-art audio and lighting effects
  • Between the scenery shop and the costume shop, the productions presented at the Robinson Theatre are top notch.
  • It really is a very "live" theater with great acoustics.
  • The variety of programs, ranging from eclectic dance performances, Classical music, Jazz, Symphonic, to a wide spectrum of theater productions, appeal to all tastes. In addition, the venue hosts several regional premieres for internationally known theater productions.

Coming up next at the Robinson Theatre, check out the annual production "Spring Into Dance", featuring a variety of dance styles ranging form ballet to tap. Spring Into Dance is coming up April 24 and 25. Get details and ticket information by calling the box office at 970-248-1604.
