Colorado is known for its beautiful 14er hikes. They are called 14ers because their peaks are 14,000 ft above sea level.

Here are some important tips to ensure you summit the peak with the best possible experience.

  • Dress in layers. It is not warm at 14,000 feet.
  • Check the weather hours before you begin your trek. Afternoon mountain storms are no joke.
  • Pack more snacks than you think you will need. Better to have too much than not enough. Granola bars, peanut butter, and beef jerky are good to have on hand.
  • Bring salty foods. You will sweat a lot of it out.
  • Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock. The sun is less forgiving at 14,000 feet
  • Do not forget water and lots of it.
  • Bring someone who has hiked a 14er before.
  • Make sure you have sturdy hiking shoes that are broken in.
  • Avoid cotton, yoga pants are not a good pant choice. Wear durable hiking gear.
  • Get an early start. (Before the sun comes up early)
  • If you see a storm rolling in, don't risk it. They come in fast and there is no forgiveness from lightning at 14,000 feet. Get Below tree level.
  • Be aware of the altitude sickness signs (headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness.) This can be serious and you'll need to get to lower elevation.
  • Bring your cell phone; this could be a life saver.
  • Have fun and take lots of pictures!
