With boating season upon us we've teamed up with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to provide you with rule and regulation reminders to help prevent deaths and injuries!

Weather is warming up and boating season is upon us and that means it's time for the Redneck Yacht Club!

With everyone heading to their favorite bodies of water we thought it was a perfect time to remind you to be safe this year!

CPW's Northwest Region Deputy Regional Manager reminds you that,

A fun day on the water can quickly turn tragic if you don't follow a few rules and recommendations and have the proper safety gear on board.

Not only that, following the rules can also help stop the spread of aquatic nuisance species that seriously threatens Colorado's waters!

Here's a refresher, keep in mind the required gear varies depending on the type of watercraft, and to check gear before launching.

  • Boats must have a minimum of one U.S. Coat Guard approved flotation device per person on board. (If you find yourself short, many of the parks have loaners you can use for the day)
  • Youth 12 and under are required to wear a PFD at all times while on board.
  • Approved sound producing device is requiqred
  • Type IV throwing device
  • Fire extinguisher on some boats

If you're unsure of whether you're ready parks personnel will also provide a FREE inspection. Get a complete list here

Tips:

  • Make sure all PDF's fit properly
  • keep an eye on the weather
  • avoid alcohol (20% of all boating accidents in 2013 involved alcohol or drugs or BOTH)

Don't forget about the Aquatic Nuisance Species Inspections! These are legally REQUIRED of all motorized and trailered vessels prior to launching. This helps stop the spread of harmful invasive species into our water system.

Exempt vessels include:

  • Rafts
  • Kayaks
  • Belly Boats
  • Float Tubes/Inner Tubes
  • Canoes
  • Windsurfer Boards
  • Stand-up Paddle Boards
  • Sail Boards
  • Hand launched & non-gas powered motor/electric motor
