I am certainly doing my share of whining about the cold and snow in Colorado, but this might be the best thing about the snow. The International Snow Sculpture Championships event  is just a month away in Breckenridge, Colorado. If there were an award for best winter event in Colorado this would be the grand prize winner.

Every year, sculpting teams from all over the world are selected to gather in Breckenridge to create the most amazing snow sculptures you can imagine. Using only hand tools, and no internal supporting structure, the artists take a 40,000 pound block of manufactured snow 10 feet wide, by 10 feet long and 12 feet high and create incredible and meticulous works of art in 65 hours.

There must be a huge cash prize for the winner! Uh, no.  No cash. The first, second, and third place winners receive a medallion, a trophy, and a ribbon - and glory.

The judging takes place on Saturday, January 26th, and the sculptures are open for public viewing until February 3rd, weather permitting. Spectators are allowed to watch the works of art in progress. Check out the 2013 winners.

If we are going to have cold and snow, we might as well make the best of it.
