Perhaps we should all hold off for a few moments before we put away the jackets and long pants. Per the norm in Western Colorado, yesterday we all received sunburns, and then today, this happens.

If you're new in town, all I can say is "Welcome to Western Colorado." Seriously, I'm sporting a lovely sunburn after spending most of the day yesterday pressure-washing my house. Now, less than 24 hours later, this happens. Yep, that's fresh snow on the Grand Mesa at roughly 10,600 feet.

The image above is from a webcam at Skyway. The National Weather Service predicts continued to rain and high-elevation snow showers well into the afternoon.

"Colorado is drunk again" - right on, I like that. There's nothing unusual about any of this. Happens all the time around here.

Looking back, it was exactly six years ago today, May 11, I spent four hours on a frontage road in Colorado waiting for the snowplows to go by. I was driving from Grand Junction to Nashville when a snowstorm hit Western Colorado. Drivers experienced a complete white-out right about Edwards, and withing a few more miles heading eastbound, had to pull over. Interstate 70 was shut down for about four hours while plows did their thing.

Looking at the National Weather Service's official page, the forecast for the town of Mesa, Colorado read:

A chance of showers before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 2pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. East wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. - National Weather Service

Didn't we just hear mention of drought conditions in Colorado? It was just last Thursday, (May 7) that Denver7 reported the day's drought scare was Colorado's first one since 2019.

76% of Colorado was experiencing at least 'abnormally dry”'conditions. Sixty-two percent of the state is experiencing moderate drought, while 41% is under severe drought conditions and 11% is experiencing extreme drought conditions. - Denver 7

Well, here we go again. Nothing new around here. If your travel plans include the higher regions, please dress and plan accordingly. Safe travels.
