DJ's are blessed to be in an industry that gives us the opportunity to experience things first hand that many folks would never have the chance to do.

That's why when we had the last air show I jumped at the opportunity to take a "media ride" in the Fat Albert JATO plane.

I thought man it'll be awesome to "putt" around the skies checking out the sites, boy was I wrong!

Little did I know that they'd be doing the air show with us IN the plane nor did I understand what this plane (which was designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft) was capable of!

Just so you understand JATO stands for Jet-Assisted Take-Off and includes 8 solid fuel rocket bottles, which produce 1,000 pounds of thrust to propel the plane skyward on short, unimproved runways with heavy weights.

I did not know any of this as the aforementioned 1,000 pounds of thrust propelled us from the tarmac, but I learned very quickly that even in a plane you can go weightless. To my credit I didn't spew until we banked back into the jet stream and the heat and smell of burning jet/rocket fuel assaulted my senses.

Unfortunately (or luckily for Britton) the last stockpile of JATO bottles were used in 2009 during the Blue Angels' show season.

But regardless of JATO status this plane can still haul some butt! Which will be displayed this weekend during the West Star Aviation Air Show!

Britton will be taking his media ride Friday at 1:30 and I've instructed him to ask for a doggie bag when he gets on the plane not when he thinks he needs it because by then it will be too late, he has reassured me that he wont puke but I disagree! Take our poll and tell me what you think!
