On Tuesday afternoon, a house on 7th street caught fire and exploded due to a gas leak from a gas line that was feeding Colorado Mesa University. There were three people in the house at the time. Two suffered minor burns, one is still in the intensive care unit.

The gas line that feeds CMU pumps natural gas at about  50 p.s.i. A normal residents gas line pumps at about 1 p.s.i. The investigation is still under way to figure out what exactly happened. Excel Energy was reportedly on the scene trying to figure out why there was a gas leak in the area when the house blew up. The City of Grand Junction hired a private contractor to do some work at the corner of 7th and Walnut to fix a traffic light. It is said, according to the KKCO website "Workers were boring into the ground, and at some point, a natural gas line was hit..."
