Is it me, or does it seem like every movie costume you see anymore is made of a material with billions and billions of little bumps all over it? The new Superman costume, the uniforms from Star Trek: Into Darkness, even the most recent Spider-Man costume, all have these boompities. Why? Personally, I'm beginning to think it is a conspiracy of some kind.

What possible purpose could it serve for Superman's suit to have thousands of little dots on it? Now that I've asked that, watch... the movie will give a reason for it. Maybe the little dots protect him from Kryptonite or something lame like that.

Okay, how about the new Star Trek uniforms? Obviously, they are a variation on the original TV series design. However, I don't recall the 1966 cast having a bunch of little bumps on their uniforms. Plain, flat material was good enough for the original Kirk and Spock, and it should be good enough for the new guys! Give me one good reason for Star Fleet uniforms to have millions of little boompities on it. Just one!

What's with Spider-Man? It seems to me one of the long-running character elements in the story revolves around Peter Parker being bankrupt all the time. How can he afford expensive material with tons of bumps? For that matter, where did he find this stuff? The old cheapy costume like the guy wore back on the 1970's Spider-Man TV show seemed a little more plausible. It looked like garbage, but it was plausible.

What is Hollywood's motivation for putting bumps on everything? It is my sincere hope that this trend is limited to garments, and won't go any further than it already has. Who wants to see a new Smokey and the Bandit movie with the Bandit's car, Trigger, covered in bumps? Maybe in the next movie, Robocop will be covered with a bunch of little metal lumpy things, looking like he has a case of Robo-zits. When will this Hollywood ploy designed to drive box office revenue end?
