Everyone should have a winter emergency preparedness kit, but the likelihood is few of us do, in part because we probably don't think we will ever need it, and in part because we don't know what should be in it.

For starters, let me clarify that the emergency kit I'm talking about is one that you would have at your house, not for your vehicle. That is something completely different.

I have to admit, I don't think I have ever been in a situation where I have needed a winter emergency kit, which is probably a good thing because I've never had one.

The fact is, we never EXPECT an emergency, consequently, we are never prepared for the just- in-case-it-happens scenario. One day we may greatly regret that. So, let's start today by getting ready for our first winter emergency if - and when- it should occur.

From SeeMomClick.com, here's what should be in your winter emergency preparedness kit.

  • Non-perishable food items like soup, granola bars, crackers, nuts (three day supply)
  • Bottled Water (they say one gallon per person per day. Keep in mind, this isn't just for drinking, it's for "bathing" as well)
  • Flashlight with batteries -and extra batteries
  • Battery operated radio - and extra batteries
  • Wet wipes
  • First Aid Kit
  • Manual can opener ( oh,  yeah, good idea!)
  • Blankets
  • Candles - with matches (It's amazing how much heat you can get from a set of candles)

Keep your kit stored in a cool, dry place like the basement, a closet, or garage. Hope you never need it, but you'll sleep better at night knowing you're covered - just in case.
