Do you remember last year when we shared the story or a Western Colorado oil field worker who was seeing an inordinate number of rattlesnakes while on the job? Well, it seems as though the summer of 2017 is going to be a repeat. Look who just dropped in for a visit.

Steven Harding, a lifelong Western Colorado resident and a member of the very cool band Lever Action has encountered a startling number of rattlesnakes over the last five years. As a matter of fact, he says until a few years ago he had never seen a rattlesnake in the wild before.

As of today, June 12, Harding estimates he's seen over 30. The video above was shot earlier today about 20 miles north of Meeker, Colorado.

Following last year's sightings, I placed a call to the Division of Wildlife. According to their spokesperson, the reported sightings did not necessarily indicate an increase in the rattlesnake population.

According to www.Colorado.gov, rattlesnakes are found across Colorado at elevations below 8,000 feet. The website adds that where you have prairie dogs, you also have rattlesnakes. Sometimes, in prairie dog colonies, the number of rattlesnakes will exceed the number of prairie dogs, as many as 100+ per acre.

When you're out and about, keep your eyes open. Be careful when walking around fallen logs or large rocks, or when near rocky outcroppings. Rattlesnakes like to hide. Sometimes, they like to sun themselves out in the open, so be cautious when walking trails.
