The world gasped in horror as surfer Mick Fanning appeared to be 'attacked' by a Great White Shark off the coast of South Africa. Is it possible this alleged attack was in fact just a big misunderstanding?

Could it be this was just a simple photo bomb gone wrong? Is it possible the shark had motives having nothing to do with eating this surfer? Here are the top six possibilities as to why the shark chose to approach Fanning:

  • The shark simply wanted an autograph.
  • The shark wanted to be on national TV and saw this as his one and only chance.
  • Fanning was swimming towards dangerous waters, and the shark was trying to warn him.
  • The shark thought it was on the "Kiss Cam" and wanted to lay a big wet one on Fanning.
  • Perhaps the shark wanted to be the world's first competitive 'Shark Surfer" and was approaching Fanning to ask for lessons.
  • The shark heard there was a casting call for 'Sharknado 4' and figured this was his chance to get noticed by network execs.

There you have it, six very valid reasons why this shark might have approached Fanning. Why are we so quick as a society to assume this was an attack?
