The Smoke Is From the East Canyon Fire Over 2,700 Acres Torched
If you have been on social media at all today it seems like most people are talking about the smoke. The smoke is coming from the East Canyon Fire which has now grown to over 2,700 acres and is 0% contained.
This fire was caused by lightning near Mancos, Colorado and a Type II Incident Command Team has taken over to strengthen and secure before the fire continues to spread. As of now U.S. 160 is currently open for traffic but if you're going to be anywhere near that area please continue to check here for updates on any potential road closures.
Fire managers want to make sure to remind citizens to leave all drones at home as there is a temporary flight restriction of 10 miles around the fire. Drones could stop all progression on fighting the fire so please adhere to this rule.
Due to the rough terrain surrounding the fire and the limited number of firefighters aerial resources to fight the fire are vital to get this fire contained.
For residents in the area that need sheltering options, you're instructed to call the La Plata County Call Center at 970-385-8700.
If you want to stay in the know as crews continue to battle the blaze make sure you like the La Plata County Government Facebook page as they are giving daily updates at this time, sometimes multiple updates per day.
We are thinking of all firefighters that are working tirelessly to contain this blaze, fingers crossed they work quickly to contain the fire, and can return home to their families safely.
