If you have never driven the road to the top of Mt. Evans, you are running out of time.

The highest paved road in North America rises to 14,265 feet and is a popular destination in the state, but with summer coming to a close, it's only a matter of time before the weather up there makes it dangerous and foolhardy to try and drive up to the summit, so you only have a week left to make it up there.

It will be the first of several high-elevation roads to close in the coming weeks.

Mt. Evans, however, is a little bit different from other high elevation roads in that there is an agreement in place with the U.S. Forest Service to close the road on a specific date, not because the weather demands it.

Tuesday, September 6 is the date so if you haven't been up to the summit of Mt. Evans this year, Labor Day weekend will be your last opportunity to do so for the year.

Otherwise, it will be spring before you can head up there again.
