The Colorado Department of Transportation is trying to reduce traffic fatalities with electronic signs on Colorado highways.

CDOT says these digital signs will show a weekly update of the number of deaths on Colorado roads so far this year. The signs will also feature safety messages aimed at reducing the number of accidents.

A total of 545 people died on Colorado roads last year, the first time since 2008 the number has climbed above 500.

The hope is the signs will encourage safer driving while reducing traffic fatalities. Motorists will start seeing the messages today, and every Wednesday throughout the year.
