Mesa County Libraries will celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week, Sept. 28 through Oct. 2, 2015.
Banned Books Week is an annual event observed by libraries, bookstores, teachers, schools, and others throughout the United States. Its purpose is to highlight the right and freedom of everyone to access reading materials of their choosing.
During Banned Books Week, Mesa County Libraries locations will display books that have been banned or challenged in the United States, and banned-book reading lists for children, teens, and adults also will be available. The Central Library at Fifth Street and Grand Avenue in Grand Junction will host a prominent reading nook in the front lobby where members of the community can publicly read banned books.
A selfie station will be available for community members who wish to take a photograph of themselves with a banned book that they can post to social media. Photos of library staff with banned titles will be on display above the self-check stations at the Central Library.
Mesa County Libraries invite members of the community to stop by their nearest library location during Banned Books Week and celebrate the freedom to read.
