
This Stretch of Northern Colorado Interstate is the Worst
Normally, my preferred method of traveling by vehicle is on the interstate. However, there is one stretch that I absolutely loathe driving on and it's right here in Northern Colorado. Ever since the construction started on the express lanes from Berthoud to Mead, I have avoided this stretch of Interstate 25 like the plague.
Construction and Driving Conditions
This seven-mile stretch feels like it's straight out of a doomsday-style movie, and the objective is crashes. I know a lot of people feel this way too, and it isn't just me. This stretch of interstate is known for terrible driving conditions, and the factors include bad driving and road construction.

According to KDVR, data shows that the number of accidents backs up everyone's claims as to how terrible this short stretch of Interstate 25 really is. If you had to guess, how many accidents have taken place on this seven-mile patch of concrete between 2022 and 2025?
The Number of Crashes Might Surprise You
If you happened to have said around 300, you are not even close. Way off, in fact. In four years, there have been 1,134 documented accidents between the mile markers of 243 and 250.
Yearly Crash Numbers
The highest annual number of crashes occurred in 2025, averaging 1.03 accidents per day with 379 crashes. The second-highest year was 2024 with 334 crashes, and the year that had the fewest amount of crashes, 183, was 2023.

With stats like that, it is no wonder that I will always choose to take the backroads, or even make the drive all the way down Highway 287 through Longmont to avoid this area as much as I possibly can.
