Of course it is. Star Trek is responsible for anything that is cool. Take a look at conclusive proof of Star Trek's involvement in creating the new Apple iPhone 6 Smart Watch.

Keep in mind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture came out in 1979. Taking that into account, you have proof the creative geniuses at Star Trek had a 35 year jump on the people at Apple.

Take a look at this video at :52, and you'll see Captain Kirk sporting his Apple Smart Watch, or communicator, or whatever you want to call it.

Okay, so the Star Trek wrist communicator only appeared briefly in the film, and was then rapidly retired. That's beside the point.
