The Grand Junction City Council has proclaimed April 25 to be Arbor Day, and they would like to celebrate by bringing you free tree seedlings.

The City of Grand Junction will be delivering free seedlings directly to your door. This gets underway soon, so if you're a Grand Junction resident, you'll want to get signed up right away.

What varieties of seedlings can you choose from? There's a long list. When signing up for delivery, you'll be asked to choose from one to five different species:

  • Bur Oak
  • Chinkapin Oak
  • Ohio Buckey
  • Bigtooth Maple
  • Bristlecone Pine
  • Bosnian Pine
  • Eastern Red Cedar

Since I'm not exactly the greenest of thumbs, it seemed wise to look into this a bit deeper. What precisely is an Eastern Red Cedar? According to Arborday.org:

Dense pyramid shape excellent for windbreaks and screens. Birds love its berries. Medium green foliage. Likes full sun. Tolerant of most soils. Matures at 40' - 50'.

Arborday.org adds, "The eastern redcedar grows in acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam, well-drained and clay soils. The tree can withstand occasional flooding yet has good drought tolerance." That sounds like a tree that would do well on my property.

This really hits the spot right about now. These are free, delivered directly to your door, and can be enjoyed without leaving your home.

There is one condition, though. The City of Grand Junction web pages asks you the following:

Do you pledge to receive, plant, and provide the care needed for the new tree seedling(s) you’re requesting??

You'll have to check a box agreeing to the above before the registration process will allow you to proceed.

Time is short. City staff will begin the process of dropping off tree seedlings beginning Monday, April 20th.
