Grand Junction’s Best Pumpkin Pie, According to Zane Mathews
Let me just say, there is a lot of bad pumpkin pie in the world today.
For two months out of the year, pumpkin pie gets a lot of attention from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and there are a number of holiday songs that reference this particular dessert. We love pumpkin pie.
In Brenda Lee's Rockin Around the Christmas Tree we hear the words "later we'll have some pumpkin pie and we'll do some caroling."
In the Christmas song Sleigh Ride we sing the words "there's a happy feeling nothing
In the world can buy as they pass around the coffee and pumpkin pie."
And in Perry Como's Home For the Holidays, there is the "man who lives in Tennessee and he was headin' for Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie."
I don't know how to make a great pumpkin pie, but I know what one tastes like. Too many pumpkin pies are just bland, they aren't sweet enough, and the crust is nothing special.
There's no question pumpkin pie is a big deal during the holidays and so a few weeks ago I began a mission to find the best pumpkin pie in Grand Junction. I sampled 10 pumpkin pies from grocery stores and restaurants and came up with a list of the top 5 pumpkin pies in Grand Junction, based upon my own personal preferences.
#5 Golden Corral
This pie was definitely flavorful and could have ranked higher on the list if the crust was as good as the pie. Never underestimate the importance of having a good crust when you are making pumpkin pie. But, still, the pie was very good.

#4 Walmart
As high as my expectations were for some of my samplings, they were probably that low when it came to the pie at Walmart. I just didn't expect it to be all that good, and, boy, was I surprised. It actually had some spice and some sweetness and overall was very good.
#3 Village Inn
Village Inn is known for its pies and so I had pretty high expectations when it came to sampling a slice of their pumpkin pie, after all, their slogan is "Best Pie in America." Well, as it turns out, it is really, really good pumpkin pie.
#2 Homestyle Bakery
Speaking of expectations, I have to confess I had high hopes when it came to Homestyle. I've had so many wonderful things from Homestyle, why would this be any different. I was not disappointed. The pie was flavorful and the crust was delicious.
#1 Marie Callender's
It must be a shock to discover that my favorite pumpkin pie in Grand Junction was in the frozen section at the grocery store. Marie's has plenty of spice, just the right amount of sweetness, the texture is perfect, and the crust is truly amazing.
It was impossible for me to try every pumpkin pie in town, so if you think you know a place that has absolutely amazing pumpkin pie, make it known in the box below and I'll give it a try.
