Prom is always a special time for teenagers, but the cost involved can make it extremely difficult for some to participate. The 5th Annual Free Prom Dress Giveaway is making prom a reality for many youths in the Grand Valley.

Let's look at the cost of a prom dress.

At promgirl.com, for example, dresses range from $100 to $500. The average price I would say is at least $300. That's a lot of money for something you're going to wear one time. Even $100 or $150 can be a real challenge for a lot of girls.

Of course, a gal wants to get her hair all fixed up and I'm guessing that's gonna run close to $100, so there is another expense. Then there is the makeup and the nails.

So, it all adds  up to be an expensive proposition to go to prom.

One of the cool things about the prom dress giveaway is some free hair-dos that will be raffled off, donated by local stylists.

With all that expense for the girls, I was going to say, boy, I'm glad I'm a guy, but then I realized that the guy has to get the tuxedo, haircut, dinner, and corsage. So, the bottom line is there are no winners when it comes to prom-- at least not financially.

However, thanks to the 5th Annual Free Prom Dress Giveaway, Grand Junction area girls have a chance to enjoy prom in a beautiful dress and at least  that part of the evening won't cost them a single dime.

The giveaway takes place Saturday, March 7 from noon until 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 8 from noon until 3 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on 4th and Ute.

They have over 500 dresses to choose from in their rolling collection - and it's absolutely free to the girls.Anyone who would like to donate a dress, jewelry, or shoes can make a contact on the dress giveaway Facebook Page.
