Living in harmony with wildlife in Colorado is easier said than done sometimes. Especially when a mountain lion drops by your house.

According to a press release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Michael D. Warren, a man in Montezuma County was recently clawed in the leg by a mountain lion.

Mountain Lion Fiasco in Southwestern Colorado

On February 27, the 47-year-old man who lives near the community of Lebanon in Montezuma County was attacked by a mountain lion.

The event transpired at his own home, and while mountain lion attacks are extremely rare, we can not entirely wipe out the possibility of one here in Colorado.

In fact, the last reported mountain lion attack of a human in Colorado occurred on March 11, 2020.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports that:

"Three other attacks in Colorado since 1990 have resulted in human deaths. "

The Play by Play of the Mountain Lion Attack

It was around 6:30 when Warren suddenly heard a loud noise that sent his pups into a barking frenzy. Initially, Warren believed the ruckus might have been caused by his domesticated cats. Therefore, Warren decided to head outside to investigate, and placed his leg in the doorway to prevent his dogs from running outside.

Almost immediately Warren realized that something had grabbed a hold of his leg. That something was a mountain lion! Luckily the mountain lion didn't hold on for too long and took off running.

Dangerous Mountain Lion Still on the Loose

Security footage of the event confirmed that the clawing was in fact done by a mountain lion. However, despite CPW's best efforts the mountain lion has yet to be found.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” said CPW district wildlife manager Matt Sturdevant. “We are still looking into it and want to make sure we get the right offending lion. Any help from the surrounding area and the public would be helpful.”

“Judging by the tracks we found and the footage we have along with the victim’s statement, we believe it is a young, sub-adult lion,” Sturdevant said. “We also believe it is the same lion that had been hanging out in the area for a bit.”
