The Colorado State Patrol has noticed a 12% increase in speeding violations in low-speed zones from 2022 to 2023. This means more and more people are speeding in places like road work zones and school zones which can result in tragic accidents.

Colorado Road Work & School Zones

Children and roadside workers are most at risk when drivers neglect to slow down through these low-speed zones. Colorado State Patrol recorded 1,237 citations in 2023, a significant increase over the previous year. It proves that aggressive driving doesn't just happen on the highways, and it's a reminder for all of us to remember to be aware of the speed limit and our surroundings this fall.

Colorado Counties with the Most Violations

Colorado State Patrol data shows that speeding in work and school zones isn't an isolated incident. There was at least one violation in 48 of Colorado's 64 counties last year. We all need to do a better job of slowing down. Listed below are the five Colorado counties that tallied the most speeding violations in low-speed zones in 2023.

  2. Larimer County (131)
  3. Adams County (127)
  4. Mesa County (111)
  5. Garfield County (88)

Pedestrian To-Do List in Colorado

As a pedestrian, we can take action to help improve our safety as we travel on foot or by bike here in Grand Junction.

  • Remember to only cross streets in designated crosswalks
  • Try to look a driver in the eye before you cross in front of their vehicle to make sure they see you.
  • Headphones and smartphones can distract someone on foot or a bike just as much as someone driving a car. Make sure your attention is where it needs to be when approaching a busy intersection or traveling in a low-speed zone.
  • Wait your turn and follow signs and warnings to be sure you cross safely.
