You don't have to spend money to keep the kids entertained this summer. Western Colorado Libraries are hosting free Summer Reading activities at branches in Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties.

There is still plenty of time to participate in summer reading challenges at Mesa County libraries. Sign up through Beanstack or by visiting your local library branch to track reading minutes, complete activity challenges, and earn prizes through July 25.

Upcoming July events include: Family Storytime at Central Library (July 8), Wild Wednesdays at Fruita Branch (every Wednesday through July), and LEGO Club at Clifton Branch (selected dates through August). Additional author talks, crafts, and family programs will continue at branches through early September. Check the online calendar for the latest schedule.

Eight Library Branches, One Summer Reading Adventure

Summer reading programs are all over Western Colorado. This summer, challenges persist at Central, Clifton, Fruita, Orchard Mesa, Palisade, Collbran, De Beque, and Gateway branches, with registration available online or in person. Get a library card, and you can also borrow eBooks, audiobooks, movies, Discovery Kits, and even check out park passes through the Library Adventure Pass program. They’re a great family resource.

Mesa County librarians say reading helps Grand Junction and Western Colorado students improve their literacy skills, confidence, and reduce the learning loss that occurs during long school breaks. Even reading a little each day—or listening to audiobooks can help students return to school better prepared. That's one reason the Summer Reading Challenge is open to readers of all ages.
