What does your favorite Grand Junction eatery do with its leftover food? Does it wind up in the landfill, or does it find its way to someone's belly? Some Grand Junction food venues participate in a program which recovers perishable food and donates it to those in need.

The sign above was spotted at the dining hall at the Colorado Mesa University dining hall. If you haven't been to the university's cafeteria before, the best way to describe it would be to compare it to a Las Vegas style buffet. You'll find assorted salad bars, pizzas, various entrees, dessert bar, build-your-own waffle station, and if you're fortunate to get there early, a very awesome omelet and skillet station.

As you can imagine, a number of perishable food products are purchased in bulk quantities. What becomes of the excess?

The Food Recovery Network is a student organized movement fighting hunger. The network unites students at various college campuses in an effort to recover food from their campus dining halls and other food venues around the community. This food, which would have gone to waste, is then diverted to organizations assisting those in need.

Since May 2013, the Food Recovery Network has expanded from a few campuses to over 100 colleges and universities. Their goal is to reach 180 campuses by May of 2016.

Would you like to see your favorite local food venue get on board with a program such as this? The next time you stop by, encourages them to do so.
