On Friday, Aug. 20, The Office of the District Attorney in the Nineteenth Judicial District released an update on a man arrested in 2018 for murdering a woman with a plunger handle.

67-year-old Jesus Romero was officially convicted after a week-long trial in Weld County. On Thursday morning, Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins handed Romero the mandatory life sentence.

Back in 2018, Romero called 911 to his apartment at the Birchwood Apartments. Romero told police that 58-year-old Edna Woodrum, the victim, was in his apartment, unresponsive, and lying in a pool of blood.

Officers responded to the call and found Woodrum naked, bloody, and dead in Romero's apartment. They also found evidence that suggested a struggle had taken place. In the investigation, neighbors reported hearing three loud thumps earlier in the evening following an apparent argument.

In addition to the life sentence, the jury also convicted Romero on three other criminal counts on Wednesday. They found Romero guilty of one count of first-degree felony homicide, one count of criminally negligent homicide, and one count of sexual assault.

In the release from the Weld County D.A., they quoted Woodrum's daughter speaking on her mother's character, saying:

Her big heart and trust for people is what killed her. [...] All she saw was a person. And, this trust and letting her guard down around this monster, cost her her life.

Romero will be serving his life sentence in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
