We went searching for what might be the longest, most continuous bike loop that is easy to follow without confusing connectors. We found a great answer out at the Lunch Loops while checking out the Tabeguache Full Outer Loop. This trail offers riders 23 miles of high-desert, total elevation gain of about 2800 feet, and a three-to-five-hour ride time.
This ride features the singletrack flow of Holy Cross and Curt’s Lane. Riders can tackle technical spots like Miramonte Rim and Eagle’s Wing, and take in the Colorado River and Monument views that are rewarded only to those who put forth the effort to ride this loop.
Highlights Along the Route
The Lunch Loops Trail System offers a sweet view of the Colorado National Monument, the Bookcliffs, and panoramas of the Grand Mesa. This route features spring and fall wildflowers, technical rock gardens and ledges that really are unique to the way Grand Junction likes to ride.
Riding the entire loop means you will be working up a thirst. 3 liters of water is recommended for the 20+ mile route. Riders are encouraged to have a spare tube, multi-tool, and plenty of your favorite snacks. Early morning and evening rides are best during the summer heatwaves. Riders should, of course, respect trail etiquette and be on the lookout for hikers and runners who share these trails.
Prep & Logistics
A smooth ride often starts with a secure parking space. The best place for parking is the Tabeguache Trailhead off Monument Road. You will find restrooms and a skills park for warm-ups. To ride the route the way it was intended, travel clockwise. You will be rewarded with a smoother ride and the best views.
There are no fees to enjoy the Tabeguache Full Outer Loop. If you enjoy the route and wish to assist in maintaining the trail you can support the Lunch Loops through the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association.
