Summer Wildfire Patrol Flights

  • In July 2025, helicopter flights increased over Western Colorado as part of the response to four major wildfires. These flights help spot and map fires and drop water on hot spots. From July to September, helicopters are a key tool for keeping watch over the Grand Mesa, Gunnison, and Uncompahgre National Forests, and in our canyons.
  • Another reason Grand Junction sees so many helicopters over the valley during the summer months is the St. Mary’s Careflight. These LifeLine helicopters respond to crashes on I-70, injuries, accidents on Grand Mesa or the Colorado National Monument, and even assist police as needed.
  • Additional flights occur over Fruita, Grand Junction, and Palisade after a storm. Companies like Xcel Energy and local co-ops use helicopters to take a close look at lines when trying to diagnose an issue.

With multiple fires in Western Colorado and plenty of summer weather left, we won't see the number of helicopter flights going down anytime soon. Helicopters continue to take off to assist the Turner Gulch, South Rim, Sowbelly, and Deer Creek fires, and monitor for new ones. CareFlights will continue year-round, and line patrols are likely to increase following wildfire response.

Power Line Inspections & Storm Response

Helicopters in Western Colorado are in use by teams like Mesa County Search and Rescue, the Colorado Army National Guard, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and more. Crews are working on monitoring fires, saving lives, and inspecting infrastructure. They make wildfire containment faster, and we are all very thankful for that.
