Window Rock Trail Delivers Big Rewards With Little Effort

If you're looking for the easiest introduction to Colorado National Monument, the Window Rock Trail is hard to beat. The half-mile round-trip walk is mostly level, making it ideal for families, first-time hikers, and anyone wanting incredible canyon views without a strenuous climb. Along the way, you'll overlook Monument Canyon, spot iconic rock formations, and enjoy classic desert scenery in about 15 minutes.

Canyon Rim Trail Offers Some of the Monument's Best Views

The Fruita side of the Colorado National Monument features several short, beginner-friendly hikes that could be a perfect fit this time of year. If you stop at the visitor’s center to look at the gift shop, or for a bathroom break, you are right next to the Canyon Rim Trail that runs between the Saddlehorn Visitor Center and Window Rock. This trail can be pretty comfortable in the morning, and this part of the monument usually catches a breeze.

In August, the Devil’s Kitchen becomes a fantastic early-morning or late-day hike if you are trying to beat the heat. Early in the day, there is still shade to be found along the 1.5-mile round trip. If you wait until late in the day, you can relax at the top as the stars begin to appear.

The Devil’s Kitchen trail is one of the more popular routes in the Monument and a memorable photo spot. The rock chamber offers shade from the heat, a place to enjoy the breeze, and the “kitchen window” offers a special view of the trails below.
