Austin Holzer has been sentenced to 70 years in prison by a Mesa County judge for shooting a deputy. After Holzer pleads guilty, his sentence is part of a plea deal.

As of Tuesday, June 5, Austin Holzer will spend 70 years in prison. Austin Holzer shot and killed a Mesa County Sheriff Deputy, Derek Geer, on February 8, 2016. Although he was 17 at the time of the shooting, he was tried as an adult.

Holzer pleads guilty to:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • First-Degree Assault

A part of Holzer's 70-year prison sentence is that he is required to spend 40 years in prison before he's eligible for parole.

Austin Holzer was 17 at the time of the shooting is currently 20 years old. This means Holzer won't be eligible for parole until 40 years from now -- when he's 60 years old.  I bet he's wondering what else he could be doing with that time.
