Suspect in a 1989 murder is now in custody.

Mesa County Sheriff's Office has stated that 67-year-old Rafael Aguilar Garcia had been located and taken into custody in Denver.

In July of 1989, Charles Porter was killed in Palisade. The incident took place on the 3600 block of F Road. Porter was shot and a witness identified Garcia as the shooter.

There is a somewhat confusing backstory to this. In 2009, this case was turned over to authorities in Mexico. Garcia was tried, but officials in Mesa County are not sure if was ever convicted. He may have been found not guilty or possible had a guilty verdict overturned somehow.

Garcia was arrested at the Denver airport on Monday and transported to Mesa County.
