All the fuss surrounding the release of the new Star Wars: Episode VII trailer has me thinking back to 1977 when I saw the original Star Wars at the Cooper Theater. The follow-up, The Empire Strikes Back was shown at the Monument Twin Cinemas. Ghostbusters and Rocky IV were shown at the Mesa Theater. Looking back to the 70s and 80s, what was Grand Junction's best movie theater?

Well, the Cooper theater has reverted back to the Avalon, and now boasts live events and even the occasional movie. The Monument Twin Cinemas, the theater where I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Poltergeist, and Star Trek II, became a gym, and then ultimately, a dance studio.

The Teller Arms Twin, where I recall seeing Little Shop of Horrors, has become, well, pretty much an abandoned eyesore.

The theater located behind Mr. Steak on North Avenue, where I first say Airplane and Every Which Way But Loose, not to mention the 70s version of King Kong, became a discount movie house, and then ultimately a bar, and now a restaurant.

The Mesa Theater, where I can recall seeing Ghostbusters in 1984, Rocky IV in 1985, and prior to that, The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu and The Nude Bomb, became a bar, and then a bar, and then another bar.

Chief Drive In - Grand Junction

The Chief Drive-In became a steak house, and the Rocket became a Super Wal-Mart. Does it strike you as odd at that Delta and Montrose have drive-ins, but Grand Junction doesn't?

Think back to the 70s and 80s, as painful as that can be at times, and try to remember which Grand Junction theater you considered to be the best. Cast your vote below. If a theater has been missed, write it in, and it will be added.
