The victim of a deadly crash off Red Mountain Pass has been identified as Edgar Vargas, the missing teenager who was traveling from Texas to western Colorado to attend a prom.

According to our news partner KKCO 11News, the Colorado State Patrol located a vehicle matching the description of the pickup the teen was driving Wednesday (April 22) at the bottom of a canyon on Red Mountain Pass near mile marker 89.

Following recovery efforts, the person in the vehicle was identified as 18-year-old Edgar Alfredo Vargas.

According to the report, authorities are unsure how long the pickup had been at the bottom of the canyon since it was not visible from the road. Vargas was reported missing last Friday when he hadn't contacted his family or reached his destination.

Vargas was the only person in the truck at the time of the crash. Authorities are still trying to determine why the pickup went off the highway and the exact cause and manner of Vargas' death.
