Earlier today I overheard a Grand Junction resident complaining about the rain that may -- or may not -- happen this weekend. It was the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Who in Western Colorado complains about rain?

Speaking as a Grand Junction native, I'm not familiar with the idea of complaining about precipitation in Western Colorado. Yes, I can recall a few times back in the 70s when we received a little more snow than we would have liked. Big deal, are we not in the high desert?

It is safe to say this person who complained about Grand Junction's 60% chance of rain this weekend has never had to live through a three-year drought. For that matter, they've probably never had to stand by and watch as half the state of Colorado burns down.

Around these parts, we like rain. Some of us, myself included, have resorted to bizarre rituals and even rain dances in hopes of conjuring up a little precipitation.

Here are five reasons why many of us are looking forward to this weekend's potential rainfall.

  • My lawn looks like crap.
  • This year's snowpack was a joke, and we're going to be hurting this summer.
  • Right now, there are places where you can walk across the Colorado River without even getting your feet wet. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be like that.
  • Some Coloradans enjoy water related activities, namely rafting - studies show that water makes rafting more enjoyable.
  • Some rain now will result in nice, green, healthy foliage, and perhaps the state of Colorado won't burn down this year.

Granted, there are some negatives associated with rain:

  • It can prevent you from enjoying your favorite outdoor activities.
  • We can get the occasional flash flood in Western Colorado, but as long as you don't get trapped in one, they're pretty cool to watch.
  • It can potentially make your hair frizzy, and well, I don't have much hair.

Aside from a bad hair day or the risk of having your home obliterated by a raging flash flood, it's hard to imaging any true negatives associated with rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, Grand Junction can expect a 30% chance of rain Friday and Friday night, followed by a 60% chance of rain this Saturday, and a 40% chance on Sunday.
