I absolutely believe that men should know how to cook. I can't stand that antiquated notion of the woman cooks and cleans while the man sits in his Lazy Boy. That is B.S.

As a kid, I had two brothers and was raised by a single mom who worked a lot. If we boys wanted to eat, we had to fend for ourselves. I still enjoy cooking. I picked up a lot from my mom, but mainly it was from years of trial and error.

I'm not saying I'll be a chef at a five-star restaurant and your man doesn't need to go to culinary school, but there are some basic dishes we men should know how to prepare.

These are dishes every man needs to know how to cook:

Grilled Cheese - looks easy, but it really takes a lot of practice to get it just right

BLT - crowd favorite, simple, just watch the splattering grease when frying the bacon

Spaghetti & Meatballs - biggest challenge is to not overcook pasta and get mush.

Mashed potatoes - the perfect butter/milk balance is crucial

Breakfast - No not cereal. Basic eggs/pancakes/french toast.  I still struggle with pancakes!

Burgers - Again, seems simple, but can easily under/over cook them.

Brownies - Yes, really and here's why. Can you imagine the response you will get when she comes home to a plate of warm brownies you made?

If for some reason, he just can't get the knack of it, buy him a crock pot. No one can goof that up. So, ladies of the Grand Valley it's time to take a night or two off from the kitchen.
