Bruce Hyde, the actor behind the starship Enterprise's navigation console in early episodes of the original Star Trek, has died at the age of 74.

While you might not recognize the name of the actor, you know doubt remember the character of Lt. O'Riley, and his stirring rendition of "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen."

In addition to his commandeering of the Enterprise's internal comm system, it was the character of O'Riley that shut the ship's engines down cold in the legendary episole, "The Naked Time."

Hyde appeared in a handful of television shows throughout his career, including "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "That Girl."

Following his acting stint on Star Trek, Bruce Hyde pursued a career in academia. He became professor emeritus of communication at St. Cloud State in Minnesota.

Bruce Hyde died of throat cancer on October 13, 2015, at the age of 74.
