World Pet Memorial Day – 40 Years of Jordan Family Pets

It's "World Pet Memorial Day." Here's a look back at 40 years of Jordan family pets, most of which came from Grand Junction's humane society.

According to Checkiday.com, World Pet Memorial Day was created by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). It is a day to memorialize your pets that have passed away. According to the site, it has always been observed the second Tuesday in June. Some sites state World Pet Memorial day is celebrated on the second Sunday of June.

The Jordan clan adopted several family members from Grand Junction's Roice-Hurst Humane Society, going back as far as the late 1970s. Let's celebrate World Pet Memorial Day with a look back at close to 40 years of the fur-babies we adopted from the shelter.

The very first pet we adopted from the Roice-Hurst Humane Society was back in 1978. We adopted Yeti, the world's best lap dog with the world's biggest feet (hence the name).

Other adoptions quickly followed: Trouble and Bambi joined the Jordan clan in 1979. Several other dogs joined the family in the upcoming years, but in their cases, they did not come from the shelter. We had several pets who came to us as strays.

In addition to the dogs we adopted for our household, I adopted two dogs from Roice-Hurst for my grandparents. When my grandmother died in 2009, I had photos of her dogs engraved on her headstone. Buddy (left) was adopted in 2006, and Nana (right) in 2008.

I can honestly tell you there is nothing like a shelter pet. They are the best friends you'll ever have. As a matter of fact, it is hard to imagine anything better than adopting a shelter pet. Do yourself the biggest favor you can and adopt. Before long, it will be hard to imagine life without them.
