West Nile Virus Found in Mesa County
Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been discovered in Mesa County.
According to a report from the Associated Press, the discovery was made Wednesday, but health officials did not say specifically where the mosquitoes were found.
Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus were also discovered this week in Weld and Boulder Counties on Colorado's front range. Weld County officials say the overall threat remains low, but they said the virus has showed up earlier than it has in recent years.
Initial human symptoms of the West Nile Virus can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, weakness and rash. More severe symptoms can include stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, vision loss, paralysis and even death.
Although the risk may be low, we are all reminded to take precautions against mosquitoes such as using insect repellant, avoiding standing pools of water, and wearing long sleeves during the prime mosquito times of the day, in the early morning and evening hours.
