Firefighters are still battling the Elk Fire burning near Red Feather Lakes in Northern Colorado. Earlier this week, the fire began as a controlled burn that quickly spread.

The fire not only threatened homes, causing a mandatory evacuation, but Larimer County has been on an air quality advisory because of the smoke, The Weather Channel reported.

As of Friday morning, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office shared in a press release that the fire is 80 percent contained, despite strong winds (with more to come this weekend). Over 600 acres have been burned, and nearly 100 firefighters are still on site.
