The Continental Divide Trail is about 3,100 miles and spans from the Mexico border through the United States to the Canada border... The trail is also celebrating its 42nd birthday this week. One of the longest trails in Northern America winds through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming Idaho, and Montana was officially designated by Congress on November 10, 1978.

Nearly 800 miles of the trail is home in Colorado starting at the border of New Mexico south of Cumbres Pass and ending the state's trail northeast of Steamboat Springs heading into Wyoming. If you were to hike the entire trail in the state of Colorado, you would experience:

  • The alpine tundra of the South San Juan, Weminuche, and La Garita wilderness.
  • The 1800's ghost town of Hancock
  • Collegiate Peaks near Leadville
  • The Windo, Knife Edge, and Devil's Thumb
  • The highest point of the Continental Divide Trail at Grays Peak, 14,270 feet of elevation.
