Grand Junction police have confirmed that a male suspect has been fatally shot and an officer has been injured.

Shortly after midnight (Friday morning), a call came in as 'suspicious.' It happened near the intersection of 9th Street and Pitkin Avenue. Apparently Pitkin Avenue was being blocked somewhere between 8th and 9th Streets.

New information reports that the officer believed that the car in question belonged to a known suspect who had been associated with earlier crimes, a weapons violation. The officer then called for back up. Soon after 'shots fired' was called over the radio by the officer. He also requested an ambulance at the scene.

Upon arriving at the scene, the back up officers discovered the initial officer trapped between a building and a vehicle. The suspect was found in that car. He had died from a gunshot wound.

No names have been released yet.
