I'll be heading to Nashville here in a little while, and I'm giving serious consideration to making a slight course adjustment to Benton, Illinois, in order to visit my dad's side of the family's home town. If I do so, should I pay a visit to the old Jordan house which belonged to the family for generations?

If you're wondering why I'm asking, the answer is simply this: I don't want to get shot. I doubt very much that people take kindly to the idea of total strangers coming up and asking to see the house. My dad sold the old Jordan home after his dad died almost 20 years ago. Of course, my hope is the situation might unfold a little more like the Miranda Lambert video.

So, how does one do this? Do you walk up, knock on the door, explain who you are, and ask to look around? Does that sound creepy? Would it freak you out? I was born and raised in Grand Junction, so I don't know a thing about how people in that part of the country react to strangers. Would you allow someone in your home if you seriously believe they used to live there? I wouldn't, and I'm the guy wanting to do it.

The old Jordan home used to be one of my favorite places on Earth, and I would like to see it again, if only on the outside. Does it seem appropriate to visit your family's former home, or is that inconsiderate?
